Travel Thursdays - Ireland's Championship Golf Courses

Volume 116

Dublin Ireland

As a travel advisor married to a man with a passion for golf, I have had the pleasure of exploring some of the best golf destinations in the world. Ireland, with its breathtaking landscapes and world-class courses, is undoubtedly a golfer's paradise. So, let's tee off and dive into the incredible golfing experiences that Ireland has to offer.

Before we delve into the golf courses, let me share my thoughts and experiences on non-golf activities in Ireland. While golf may be the main attraction, Ireland has so much more to offer. For those who are not avid golfers or are traveling with non-golfing companions, there are plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained. One of my favorite non-golf activities in Ireland is visiting the Irish Whiskey Museum in Dublin. Here, you can learn about the history and craftsmanship behind Ireland's famous whiskey, and even sample a few drams. It's a fascinating experience that gives you a taste of Irish culture and heritage.

Speaking of Dublin, the capital city itself is a vibrant and lively destination that offers a myriad of attractions for non-golfers. From exploring the historic Dublin Castle to strolling through the colorful streets of Temple Bar, there's something for everyone. Indulge in a traditional Irish meal at one of the city's many pubs or catch a live music performance for a truly authentic experience. Dublin truly has a charm of its own that shouldn't be missed.

Now, let's talk about the golf courses within one hour of Dublin. One of the advantages of golfing in Ireland is the accessibility of courses from major cities. Dublin, in particular, is a hub for golfers, with several exceptional courses located just a short drive away. Some notable courses in this area include Portmarnock Golf Club, The Island Golf Club, and Royal Dublin Golf Club.

Portmarnock Golf Club, located on a peninsula just outside of Dublin, is a championship links course that has hosted numerous prestigious events. With its stunning coastal views and challenging fairways, it's no wonder that Portmarnock is consistently ranked among the top courses in Ireland. The course layout is a true test of skill, with strategically placed bunkers and undulating greens. Playing here is an experience that every golfer should have on their bucket list.

The Island Golf Club, situated on a narrow strip of land between the Irish Sea and the Broadmeadow Estuary, is another gem within reach of Dublin. This links course offers a unique and picturesque setting, with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The challenging layout, coupled with the ever-changing coastal winds, will keep even the most seasoned golfers on their toes. Be sure to stop and admire the stunning views as you make your way around this remarkable course.

Royal Dublin Golf Club, located on Bull Island, is steeped in history and tradition. This classic links course has a rich heritage and has been challenging golfers for over 130 years. The course offers a variety of holes that will test your accuracy and shot-making skills. With its stunning views of Dublin Bay and the Dublin Mountains, a round of golf here is as visually rewarding as it is challenging.

The combination of breathtaking scenery, challenging layouts, and the warm hospitality of the Irish people make golfing in Ireland an unforgettable experience.

In conclusion, Ireland is a top-notch golf destination that caters to all types of travelers. Whether you're a golf enthusiast or a non-golfer looking for a diverse range of activities, Ireland has it all. From championship golf courses to cultural attractions, there's something for everyone to enjoy. So, start planning your golfing adventure in Ireland and get ready for an experience that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.
