AmaWaterway's Taste of Bordeaux River Cruise
If you find yourself in Libourne, you're perfectly positioned to dive deep into the heart of France's famed Bordeaux wine region. Libourne acts as your gateway to some of the most celebrated grape-growing areas in the world, like Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. And let me tell you, there’s nothing quite like the opportunity to sip and swirl your way through these iconic vineyards.
Libourne is surrounded by a gorgeous patchwork of vineyards offering a wealth of wine-tasting experiences. Each vineyard offers its distinct character, from intimate, family-run operations to grand, historic estates that have been crafting wine for generations.
Imagine strolling through rows of lush grapevines with the sun on your face and the earthy scent of fertile soil wafting through the air. It's not just about the tasting—it’s about immersing yourself in the entire winemaking process. Picture yourself learning about how the grapes are carefully nurtured and harvested, then transformed into the rich Merlot and robust Cabernet Franc that the area is famous for. Your taste buds will be in for a treat as you sample these wines right where they’re made!
The quaint village of Blaye is about an hour and a half drive from Libourne. Blaye is famous for its impressive Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site overlooking the Gironde estuary. Trust me, wandering through this massive fortress is like stepping back in time. Plus, the views from up there are simply awe-inspiring. Be sure to check out the local market if you're visiting on a Wednesday – it’s a delightful way to sample some local produce and crafts.
Blaye and Bourg are on the Right Bank, the area to the north of the Dordogne River. The Medoc region is the Left Bank, which is the area south of the Garonne River. Both sides make up the larger Bordeaux region, but each has its own winemaking region. The Medoc region is where you will enjoy exquisite red blends, with Cabernet Sauvignon being the dominant force.
Even though Bordeaux is a small region, it is rich in wine history and experiences. You can go from Bordeaux to Libourne , wander through Blaye and Bourge, detour to the Medoc region and onto Cadillac before heading back to Bordeaux and you will not run out of wineries and vineyards to explore and wines to savor.
