Volume 138

Cruising The Chobe In Zimbabwe

For our final week of looking at the Chobe River area for river cruising, (stay tuned for cruises on the Nile) we will explore Zimbabwe, a common part of a Chobe River Cruise itinerary. Zimbabwe is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Africa, brimming with natural beauty, rich culture, and ancient history. It is also home to Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Zimbabwe has something for everyone, whether you're an adventure seeker, wildlife enthusiast, or history buff.

Geographically, Zimbabwe is a landlocked country bordered by South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, and Zambia. One of the most notable geographical features of Zimbabwe is the mighty Zambezi River, which flows through the country and forms the iconic Victoria Falls. These falls are also known as "The Smoke That Thunders”. Standing in front of this awe-inspiring cascade of water is an experience like no other. The sheer power and beauty of Victoria Falls will leave you speechless and undoubtedly make it a highlight of your visit to Zimbabwe.

In addition to Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park, and Great Zimbabwe Ruins are some of the top destinations in Zimbabwe. These attractions are not to be missed and will provide you with unforgettable experiences during your visit to this incredible country.

Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe's largest national park and a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Covering an area of over 14,000 square kilometers, Hwange is home to a diverse range of animal species, including elephants, lions, giraffes, and zebras. The park's vastness and untouched wilderness make it an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic African safari experience. Keep your eyes peeled for the famous elephant herds that roam freely in Hwange, as well as other iconic species such as buffalo, zebras, and wildebeests.

The Great Zimbabwe Ruins is a UNESCO World Heritage site that holds great historical and cultural significance. These ancient stone structures date back to the 11th century and were once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe. Walking through the Great Enclosure and the Hill Complex, you will gain a deeper understanding of Zimbabwe's rich history and the legacy of its past civilizations. The intricate stone walls and the ruins of the Great Zimbabwe Hill provided a glimpse into the lives of the people who once inhabited this remarkable site. Exploring the Great Zimbabwe Ruins is like stepping back in time and discovering the remnants of an advanced civilization that thrived centuries ago. It's a humbling experience that allows you to appreciate the ingenuity and architectural prowess of the people who built this magnificent city.

Zimbabwe is a culturally diverse country with a rich heritage. It is home to various ethnic groups, including the Shona, Ndebele, Tonga, and many others. Each group has its own unique traditions, languages, and customs, adding to the vibrant tapestry of Zimbabwean culture.
